AYF Camp Haiastan field trip: An educational journey through history and civics

AYF Camp Haiastan’s Session 1 for the older group embarked on an enriching field trip that combined history, civics and cultural heritage. This excursion not only provided the campers with a memorable experience but also deepened their understanding of their Armenian roots and the legislative process in the United States.

The day began with a visit to the Rhode Island State House, a beacon of Rhode Island’s rich political heritage. The campers had the unique opportunity to meet with Senator David Tikoian. Senator Tikoian warmly welcomed the group and engaged them in a discussion about the process of passing resolutions, specifically focusing on the Armenian Genocide resolution in Rhode Island, which is passed annually. This session was particularly enlightening, as it provided the campers with a firsthand look at the intricacies of legislative work and the importance of advocacy in ensuring historical events are recognized and remembered.

The next stop on the itinerary was the North Burial Ground Cemetery, where the campers paid their respects by laying a wreath at the memorial dedicated to the victims of the Armenian Genocide. This solemn moment provided a poignant reminder of their heritage and the importance of remembrance and recognition of past atrocities.
